Caleb Williams and offense again plagued by slow start in loss

Bears first overall draft pick Caleb Williams thought he handled all the hype over his matchup against No. 2 pick Jayden Daniels well.

He did not achieve it with victory or with points in the 44 minutes of the game.

The Bears looked offensive early against Washington in an 18-15 loss much the same way they did against the Colts and Texans, two other road losses.

Never mind the heartbreaking Hail Mary, their defense gave up. That was defensively during a play, ruining an otherwise noble effort. The offense, however, had no excuses for a bye week and coming back as if they were still off.

“We have to be better in the first quarter,” Williams said, in a statement repeated in Halas Hall probably more times than any other this season. “That starts with me coming out quickly.

“That starts with, you know, getting out quickly. You know, we kept getting the ball from the beginning.

“We have a great defense that helped us stay there, but we have to be better and play complementary football.”

Williams led a pair of late touchdown drives, including the go-ahead goal in the final minute, before losing on the Hail Mary. But before that he had his own share of mistakes.

He was sacked well out of field goal range just before halftime and when he did, he had first stepped off the tackle, then backed away and was out of reach.

“I have to get the ball out, be better with it,” Williams said.

If he had simply thrown it away, the Bears would have kicked a 43-yard field goal, but he suffered a 15-yard loss.

He had another similar situation in the first half when he could have had a first down running with him and he slid short after he had been working his way through the defense by climbing up the backfield.

“Yeah, after I did all the little shenanigans in the backfield and I got upright, I actually thought I had the first down and I looked and I slid and spun when the guy was coming,” Williams said. “I should have taken the hit and fallen forward, but I slipped, I kind of slid to the side, I thought, I had it and I didn’t.”

Williams seemed out of shape in the passing game during the first half and even into the third quarter. He completed 3 of 8 passes for 33 yards in the first half and ultimately finished 10 of 24 for 131 yards. They definitely seemed to lack the momentum and momentum they had in the passing game before their break, at least until the fourth quarter.

“We could have played better offense all game to put ourselves in a better position and we will,” Williams said.

The pressure of playing in his hometown against the No. 2 pick in the draft wasn’t a concern, he said, although something seemed to be bothering him from the start. It’s a good thing he overlooked that because Daniels threw for 195 more yards. Daniels was 21 of 38 for 326 yards and a touchdown or a passer rating of 92.7.

“Yeah, I think I did a good job of tuning out the emotions,” Williams said.

“Just another football game.”

Except the end with Daniels’ Hail Mary pass.

“It’s obviously a heartbreaking play,” Williams said.
