Parking restrictions confirmed for Diwali day

A number of parking restrictions have been confirmed for Diwali celebrations in Leicester.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to descend on the Golden Mile in Belgrave for the Diwali Day festivities, which is on October 31.

Leicester City Council confirmed that parking will be suspended on 14 streets from 06:00 GMT that day.

The authority has warned that any vehicle on any road in the Belgrave area found to be causing an obstruction will also be fined and towed away.

Belgrave Road itself will also be closed and all its junctions and side roads will be prohibited between 5pm and 9.30pm, the authority said.

The Hindu festival of light had previously been celebrated with two events: a light switching event and a Diwali Day event, but the first will not take place this year as the city council looks to save money.

Parking will be suspended on the following roads:

  • Loughborough Highway
  • Holden Street
  • Ross Walk
  • MacDonald Highway
  • Hilyard Road
  • marjorie street
  • Abbey Park Street
  • Harrison Road
  • Surrey Street
  • Doncaster Highway
  • Cossington Street
  • Rothley Street
  • Rendell Highway
  • Portsmouth Highway

Cars left on these streets will be ticketed and towed, drivers are warned.

This is to allow emergency vehicles and council staff to clear routes through the area, the Local Democracy Reporting Service saying.

The restrictions will be in force until 10 pm on Diwali day.
