Rock Island 3rd Ward Alderman to Resign at City Council Meeting

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. (KWQC) – Rock Island Third District Councilman Kevin Maynard will be resigning from his seat on the city council.

Monday, Aldo. Maynard will resign following the end of Monday night’s city council meeting that begins at 6:45 p.m., according to a news release from the city of Rock Island. Maynard was appointed by Mayor Mike Thoms in February.

Aldo. Maynard, who also serves as executive director of Quad City Arts, accepted a position at Florida State University as executive director of Opening Nights, according to the news release. He begins his role on November 4.

“It has been a pleasure to serve the Third Ward in Rock Island,” Ald. Maynard said. “While it is difficult to leave, I know the City of Rock Island is in great hands with the current council members and the incredible staff in place. During my short tenure, I am proud of what the City of Rock Island has accomplished. I hope to visit Rock Island in the near future to see all the work that has been started and completed.”

According to the press release, Mayor Thoms is required by state statute to nominate someone to fill a vacant council seat within 60 days of his resignation. Once a candidate has been nominated, city council members will have 30 days to vote whether to approve or reject the appointment.

The Third District seat will be up for election in the April 2025 municipal election, according to city officials.
