Laurel County Comes Together to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

LONDON, Ky. (WYMT) – As October ends, communities are still coming together to show their support for those fighting breast cancer.

Members of the Laurel County community gathered at South Laurel High School to show their support for one of their own who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018.

Two and a half years after first learning she had breast cancer, Renee Rogers discovered that her breast cancer was becoming metastatic.

Knowing about Rogers’ battle, Layne Miller organized an event to raise money for the woman who played an important role in his life.

“My older sister actually played softball with Renee’s granddaughter,” Miller said. “In a way, Renee raised me as a child. “I feel very strongly about breast cancer awareness and wanted to support it in any way possible.”

The event consisted of a bake sale, raffle and a walk to support Rogers.

For Miller, the outpouring of support for a close friend made the event that much more special.

“I’m so grateful that so many people came out and supported her and all the strong people who are fighting,” Miller said. “I’m really grateful to have the opportunity to raise awareness and money for a really important cause.”

While October is coming to a close, Miller said the message of an event like this is to continue showing support all year long.

“I think it’s important for people to realize that even when it’s not about breast cancer awareness, we should still support our sisters who are fighting this horrible battle and we should just encourage them and support them even when we don’t have signs on Our faces are telling us to wear pink this month,” Miller said.

Along with an event, Miller said they have a fundraiser through the National Breast Cancer Foundation and raised more than $400 in Renee’s honor.
