Shusterman is running against Mauro for a seat in the state Legislature

Republican Regina Mauro is running against incumbent Democrat and Schuylkill Township resident Melissa Shusterman, 57, in the House of Representatives for the 157th District.

Each candidate was emailed the same questions and given 425 words to respond. Mauro did not return the questionnaire within the specified period.

Melissa Shusterman, Democrat

Name one issue facing the district you want to represent and how you would address that issue if elected.

We have a responsibility to ensure that our district has the transportation infrastructure to move our critical workforce, seniors and people of varying abilities in and through our region without delay or disruption through a continued investment in public transportation (buses, trains, Rovers ) roads, bridges and stormwater infrastructure.

The flip side of this issue is that we need to invest in our healthcare providers. Many healthcare workers (childcare, home care, direct support workers and nursing care) live outside our neighborhood. Investing in transportation supports this crucial workforce.

What specific actions should the state Legislature take to make life more affordable for the people who live in your district?

Here are specific ways the PA Legislature can help make life a little more affordable:

· Passage of HB2536 provides residents with property tax relief and reforms.

· This year’s budget included the largest investment in primary and secondary education and that investment also provides a property tax rebate. State-level investments in schools must continue.

· Expansion and continuation of the tax credit for childcare and dependent care. This helps working people with their healthcare costs. This bill was authored by myself and Representative Davis and should remain part of the state budget.

· Investing in public transportation will help people get to and from work and loved ones. If we invest in public transport we can reduce the number of cars people have per household

· Student loan reform and relief and reforms.

· Investing in affordable housing.

How do you gather feedback from the community about their needs and concerns?

For almost six years, my office has received concerns from neighbors via phone, email and social media.

We also get feedback when we go out into the community and host (town halls, coffee talks, satellite office hours, community days, movie nights, veterans events, senior events, roundtables, pet fairs and walks & talks).

These personal interactions are opportunities to hear from the community and address their needs and concerns through case work and legislation.

What inspired you to run for office?

I ran for public office so I could represent women and ensure they had the dignity and right to make their own reproductive decisions.

I also ran to represent the children of our district and secure a prosperous future for them. That’s why I’m passionate about education, community safety, affordable housing, civics, accessibility, and mental health resources.
