Newton County School District hosts community conversations and scholarship giveaways

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – Newton County School District invited parents, students and community members to the CTE building to learn more about the purpose of the facility.

People were able to tour the classrooms, speak with teachers and even speak with the superintendent during a roundtable discussion at the Newton County Career and Technical Education center.

State Treasurer David Mcrae even made an appearance. He was there to see the progress the school district is making and has made, but he was also there to hand out $2,000 in scholarships to the students in attendance.

“The average child goes to college with roughly $35,000 worth of debt and College Savings, Mississippi College and career savings. In Mississippi, we don’t want to have kids, go to college and graduate with debt, and set them on the right path. It’s their best foot forward,” Mcrae said

“We’ve been working on the strategic plan for about a year now, and this is our big rollout to the community and to parents to demonstrate what our vision is and what our plans are going forward for the Newton County School District,” said Superintendent Brooke Sibley.

The scholarship winners were Anna Boudreaux and Mackenzie Platt.
