DEERPARK — Fifteen cows escaped Sunday evening when a tractor carrying them overturned on Interstate 84, state police said.

Six cows are still missing.

New York State Police said troopers responded to a report of an overturned tractor at the intersection of I-84 Exit 1 and U.S. Route 6 in the town of Deerpark on Sunday shortly after 6 p.m.

Troopers said a preliminary investigation revealed that a 2006 Kenworth tractor trailer with mixed breed cows on board was traveling west on I-84 at the time when the driver reported his brakes failed.

The vehicle exited I-84 at Exit 1 and was making a left turn on US Route 6 when it struck a guide rail, overturned and came to rest on its side. The driver, who was not identified by police, suffered minor injuries.

Fifteen cows were able to escape due to the damage to the trailer.

State police, with the help of local ranchers, Port Jervis Police, Town of Deerpark Police, Huguenot Fire Department, State Department of Transportation and Port Jervis EMS, were able to locate and corral nine of the cows.

There are currently six cows missing. Anyone who sees them is asked to contact state police at 845-344-5300.
