MAGADonald’s? Trump appears to be benefiting from the viral fast food crowd

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump isn’t done taking your order yet, as the final days of the 2024 campaign turn into a fast-food battle with many Americans still stressed about how much it costs to eat.

After creating a viral moment on Sunday by wearing an apron and working as a fryer at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania, the former president’s campaign is now selling “MAGADonald’s” T-shirts.

“I have a McGift for you!” says the campaign’s online gift shop above a T-shirt with a photo of Trump leaning out of a drive-thru window.

The visit was called a stunt by some critics, but it was part of a larger effort by the Trump campaign to undermine Vice President Kamala Harris and her appeal to working- and middle-class voters, especially how she emphasized working for the $225 billion. fast food chain at university.

Trump, for example, mocked his Democratic rival and suggested without evidence that she had never worked at a McDonald’s.

“I’m looking for a job and I’ve always wanted to work at McDonald’s. I never did,” he said in a video on X.

The former president’s campaign also linked their t-shirts to voters’ frustration over continued price increases and criticized Harris over inflation under the Biden administration, saying “prices for a meal are going through the roof” as result of their policy.

A survey by Swiftly, a Seattle-based retail technology company, found that about 70% of American adults struggle to afford groceries. About 64% said supermarket prices and inflation will be “important factors in deciding” who they vote for this year.

According to the Labor Ministry’s consumer price index, inflation hit a three-year low in September, with food prices rising about 0.4%. Experts point out that food and energy costs are more volatile than those of other products. For example, the cost of eggs increased by 8.4% during a two-year bird flu outbreak.

The Harris campaign has hit back by calling out how Trump has dodged questions about supporting a minimum wage increase. In 2019, when he first ran for president, Harris visited a McDonald’s in Nevada and called on Congress to approve a $15 hourly wage.

Harris’ team also drew attention to how Trump’s Labor Department, as president, sided with fast-food companies over workers when it came to violating pay rules.

“Vice President Harris and I grew up middle class, we understand that. She actually worked at a McDonald’s,” Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, said recently during an appearance on The View.

“She was not going to pander to McDonald’s employees and disrespected them by standing there in your red tie and taking a picture,” the Minnesota governor added. “His policies undermine the very workers who were in that McDonald’s, whether it’s about homeownership, health care, reproductive rights or the cost of products.”
