Kim Kardashian Defends Erik and Lyle Menendez After Visiting Them in Jail with ‘Monsters’ Star Cooper Koch: “They’ve Spent Enough Time”

Kim Kardashian is calling on the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office to “right the wrongs they have done” to the Menendez brothers, after the convicted siblings were granted a Nov. 29 hearing to review new evidence.

Kardashian, who visited the brothers in prison Monsters: The Story of Lyle and Erik Menendez star Cooper Koch, said Ryan Murphy’s new Netflix series opened her eyes to the reality of the case.

“I don’t think they ever got a fair second trial and I feel like I’ve been watching Ryan Murphy’s ever since Monsters shows that it really opened up and showed me so much about abuse,” she recently shared Variety at the Academy Museum Gala. “Imagine if no one believed you.”

She added, “The DA’s office should actually right the wrongs they committed many years ago. That doesn’t mean they shouldn’t have spent time. It just means that I really believe they deserve a second chance and that they have spent enough time on it.”

Erik and Lyle were sentenced to life in prison without parole in 1996 after being convicted of the 1986 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez. The brothers claimed the murder occurred after years of sexual abuse by their father.

“The punishment they received has been in place for almost 35 years. That is more than a first-degree murder charge,” Kardashian said. “I am someone who believes in second chances and I really believe in them.”

Kardashian wrote an essay for NBC News after her meeting with the brothers at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility. In her essay, she noted that “much of the abuse evidence was deemed inadmissible during their second trial,” “depriving jurors of crucial evidence.”

Although she recently praised Murphy’s Netflix series, in her personal essay she described how the brothers were “sensationalized” in the media during the life of their case. “Erik and Lyle’s case became entertainment for the nation… There was no room for empathy, let alone sympathy,” she wrote.

Koch, who played Lyle Monstersalso said he was “very excited” that the brothers would have a chance at being released. But he said he isn’t interested in reprising the role if he gets the chance to film bonus episodes after their potential release.

“I think we’ve told the story. We did it,” he said Variety. “I think I’m ready for the next thing. I loved talking about it and I loved advocating for them and I’m really excited for them to hopefully come out, but in terms of being Erik again, I think I’m ready to let that go to leave.

Monsters: The brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez has received criticism for the way it depicted the brothers and the abuse they faced. Erik and Lyle have even called the show “disheartening slander.”

But Murphy appears to be in favor of giving the brothers a new hearing. “Like (Kim Kardashian), I don’t think anyone should be thrown away forever,” he said. “But I know not everyone thinks that. It’s complicated.”
