Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) – an evangelical Christian who has his teenage son monitor his internet usage to prevent him from viewing adult content online – became visibly irate on CNN this weekend when a journalist tried to call him out on Donald Trump’s bizarre comments put over a golfer’s penis.

“Don’t say it again,” Johnson snapped at CNN’s Jake Tapper State of the Union yesterday. “We don’t have to say it!”

At issue were comments Trump made Saturday at a rally in Pennsylvania during one of his walking sessions, where he discussed the late professional golfer Arnold Palmer at length before discussing the size of his genitals.

“Arnold Palmer was all man,” Trump said at the meeting. “And I say that with all due respect to women, and I love women. But this man, this man, this is a man who was all man. This man was strong and tough.”

“And I refuse to say it,” Trump said before just saying it, “but when he was in the shower with the other pros, they came out of there and said, ‘Oh my God, that’s incredible.’”

“I had to say it. I had to say it. We have women here who are very sophisticated, but they used to look at Arnold.”

“And I had to tell you the shower part of it, because it’s true. What can I tell you? We want to be honest, we want to be honest.”

On Sunday, Tapper brought up the comments during an interview with Johnson. By then, clips of Trump’s comments about Palmer had already gone viral on social media.

“Donald Trump’s campaign suggested he would begin previewing his closing arguments on Saturday evening, with Election Day just two weeks away,” Tapper said. “But the former president began his meeting with a detailed story about Arnold Palmer, at one point even praising the late, legendary golfer’s genitals.”

“Is this really the final message you want voters to hear from Donald Trump? Stories about Arnold Palmer’s penis?

Johnson did not want to talk about Trump’s comments, but was also unwilling to criticize Trump for making them part of the election news cycle. Instead, he attacked Vice President Kamala Harris: “I think the headline I read yesterday about the Pennsylvania meeting was the big question, and it’s the question that Kamala Harris has been unable or unwilling to answer. And that is, are you better off now than you were four years ago under the Trump administration?”

Tapper responded by pointing out that if President Joe Biden had made similar comments to Trump, Johnson “would be on this show right now saying you were shocked and horrified, and you would be suggesting this was evidence of his cognitive decline. ” Tapper brought one New York Times article comparing Trump’s 2015 speeches to this year and noting that his rhetoric has changed and that he has become “angrier, less focused, more profane and increasingly fixated on the past.”

“Why is he talking about Arnold Palmer’s penis in front of Pennsylvania voters?” Tapper asked.

“Jake, you seem to really like that line,” Johnson replied, chuckling even though he didn’t seem to find the discussion funny at all. “Let me tell you, Donald Trump is holding rallies across the country trying to say something.”

The two talked over each other, arguing about whether people should discuss Trump’s comments about Palmer, and Johnson tried to end the argument by saying he would “do something about it.” Tapper stopped talking and let Johnson finish.

“Don’t say it again,” Johnson said. “I understand, there are lines at a rally when President Trump is at a rally, sometimes he speaks for two hours straight. Do you doubt his endurance? His mental acuity? Joe Biden couldn’t do that for five minutes!”

He said Biden couldn’t get as many people to his rallies if he kept them, saying Tapper “can pick a few words or lines from a two-hour event” and claiming the same could be done with Harris’ rallies “because she does word salads and couldn’t do that, she couldn’t hold court like that without a teleprompter.”

Tapper then brought up Trump’s statements that he would use the military and National Guard to jail leftists. Johnson lied and said Trump was talking about gangs and Tapper said, “No,” and played another clip of Trump naming the Democrats he wanted to jail, including Reps. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA ).

Arnold Palmer’s daughter, Peggy Palmer, criticized Trump for his comments.

“I thought it was an unfortunate way to commemorate my father,” she said The independent.

“My father was very modest. We’ve lost our sense of outrage in this country about pretty much everything, and I’m not sure that’s okay. There are other things about my father that we can better focus on.”
