McLaren boss criticizes F1 stewards for 'inappropriate' Lando Norris punishment

McLaren team boss Andrea Stella has hit out at F1 stewards for imposing an “inappropriate” punishment on championship contender Lando Norris.

Norris passed title rival Max Verstappen for third place at Turn 12 with four laps to go, but was given a five-second time penalty for completing the off-track maneuver.

That meant that Norris dropped to fourth place behind Verstappen after the checkered flag, allowing the Red Bull driver to further extend his championship lead to 57 points with five races to go.

“My view is that the way the stewards interfered with a beautiful piece of motorsport was inappropriate because both cars were off the track, giving both cars an advantage,” Stella told Sky Sports.

“It’s a shame, because it cost us a podium. It took us a race where we stayed patient after being pushed off the side in the first corner on the first lap. We have accepted it.

“Having made our position very clear, these types of decisions by the stewards cannot be appealed. The chapter is now closed for us and we will continue with the race.”

Norris opted not to give the place back to Verstappen after McLaren claimed he had been ahead of the reigning world champion at the top of the corner.

Asked if McLaren was considering telling Norris to give up the position, Stella said: “We double checked that both cars had gone off track. So there was no doubt for us that the maneuver was correct.”
