Insomniac isn’t confirming a ‘Spider-Man 2’ DLC, but what about the Venom game?

Insomniac has announced that Spider-Man 2 will be coming to PC on January 30, 2025, less than a year and a half after its launch on PS5, which is a pretty quick turnaround.

But what they also said in this announcement is that there will be no story DLC available for Spider-Man 2, which marks a departure from the plans leaked in the big Insomniac hack last year.

According to those documents, three DLCs of some size were planned especially in the last year, and that clearly didn’t happen, and won’t happen in the future. These were based on Beetle, Carnage, and a Spider-Verse tie-in, with Carnage at least heavily teased in the main game. These would be released from 2023 and continue until today. For example, according to this, Carnage should be released in early 2024. But there is no delay, it just doesn’t happen. Instead, just the PC release.

But what about Venom?

Another significant leak was that Insomniac was planning a separate Venom outing, one bigger than these DLCs and possibly similar to something like Miles Morales, which launched with the PS5 generation and was quite successful. This has never been publicly announced, but the wording here would imply that something like a potential standalone Venom offering wouldn’t be “Spider-Man 2 story DLC”, and as such may still happen. Canceling these other DLCs might even indicate that things are even more It is likely that this will happen if those resources are spent on it.

But if we’re not interpreting this correctly, and Venom is considered some sort of Spider-Man DLC, then they might be completely done with Spider-Man and his friends for a while. After all, Insomniac’s new Wolverine game will likely be released in late 2025, just two years after Spider-Man 2, and spending significant resources on Spidey DLC or a Venom game could negatively impact that.

There was a weird story that Spider-Man 2 was something of a disappointment for Sony, but it sold 2.5 million copies in 24 hours and five million in 11 days, a record pace for a PS original. It has sold 11 million copies as of April 2024. The game came with an exceptional metascore of 90 and received an 8.8/10 from fans.

The only thing I can see here is the fact that it had an incredibly high budget, reportedly triple what the first game cost, but obviously without tripling the content, with much of the original Manhattan map from the first game was used, which has just been expanded. It was not significantly bigger or longer than the original, so it is unclear whether Sony was happy with the overall profit despite these high numbers and scores. But that’s a budget problem, not a quality problem.

I think it would be wise to skip a Venom game and pour everything into Wolverine. But given the success of Miles Morales and this new Spider-Man iteration, maybe not. But this statement somehow confirms everything.
