Luis Suarez confirms contract talks with Inter Miami

Uruguayan forward Luis Suarez confirmed on Friday that he is in talks with Inter Miami about extending his contract.

The Uruguayan striker, who signed a one-year contract with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club through the 2024 season, said his lawyers are currently in discussions with the team.

“I know my lawyer has spoken to the club,” Suarez said in Spanish. But I have a clear opinion about finishing the season, that’s what I wanted, to end the season in the best possible way, to show to the club that when someone has the desire, he or she physically will feel good. , hoping to remain part of the history of this club.”

When asked by a reporter if he would play another year, Suarez said: “It depends on the club. If it were up to me, I would be very happy.”

The 37-year-old has played a huge role in Inter Miami’s breakout campaign this year, leading the team to its first ever Supporters’ Shield. Despite early concerns about his fitness and recurring injuries, Suarez scored 18 goals and seven assists in 26 games played.

He sits fourth in this year’s Golden Boot race, just five goals behind first place. Suarez was also recently nominated for the MLS MVP award, along with his Inter Miami teammate Lionel Messi.

The team remains on pace to break the MLS record for most points in a single season, depending on the outcome of their Saturday match against New England Revolution at Chase Stadium.

In September, Suarez announced his retirement from international football, making the Uruguayan national team the all-time top scorer with 169 goals in 142 appearances.

The forward later criticized the culture of his national team under Marcelo Bielsa during this summer’s Copa America. The team finished the tournament in third place.

“There were situations during the Copa America that were painful to watch, which I did not talk about for the sake of the group,” Suarez said. “It will continue to happen. The players are going to reach a limit and explode.”
