The Jockey Club confirms that the foal harvest in 2024 has fallen by more than two percent

Based on statistics collected through Oct. 13 of this year, the Jockey Club of America reports that the live foal harvest in 2024 is down 2.4 percent compared to 2023, the organization said in a news release Friday.

The Jockey Club estimates that the number of live foals reported to date is 85-95 percent complete. In 2023, 1,181 stallions covered 28,104 mares in North America, producing 17,700 live foals in 2024. That is a decrease of 2.4 percent compared to the 18,143 live foals in 2023.

For the 2024 foaling season, the Jockey Club also received 1,979 reports of no foals. Ultimately, the registered foal harvest is expected to reach 18,000 by 2024.


The number of stallions was down 5.4 percent from the 1,248 reported for 2022 this time last year, while the number of mares bred was down 1.6 percent from the 28,548 reported for 2022.

The American Revolution in New York produced more mares than any other non-Kentucky stallion. Win Win Win led all Florida stallions by breeding 40 mares. Star Guitar led Louisiana with 103 mares, and Mo Forza led California with 90 mares. In the Midlantic region, Blofeld led Maryland with 76 mares, and Warrant led the Pennsylvania stallions with 49.

Kentucky annually leads all states and provinces in Thoroughbred breeding activities. Kentucky stallions accounted for 60.7 percent of reported bred mares in North America in 2023 and 65.6 percent of reported live foals in 2024.

The 17,056 mares bred to 211 Kentucky stallions in 2023 produced 11,605 live foals, a 0.4 percent increase over the 11,564 live 2023 Kentucky foals reported this time last year. The number of mares bred to Kentucky stallions in 2023 increased 1.4 percent from the 16,827 reported for 2022 this time last year.

The following table shows the 10 states and provinces with the most mares bred in 2023, sorted by the number of live foals sired by the state/province from 2024 reported through October 13.

The statistics include 176 foals from stallions standing in North America but born abroad, as reported by foreign studbook authorities at the time of publication. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had 61 live foals and Japan was in second place with 52.

The report also includes 66 mares bred from 24 stallions in North America in the Southern Hemisphere; most of these mares have not yet had foals. By 2022, 67 mares had been bred from 23 stallions in the Southern Hemisphere in North America.
