Kamala Harris’ campaign confirms she will speak in Lansing on Friday at the UAW 652 hall

LANSING – Supporters of Vice President Kamala Harris in the Lansing area who were hoping to catch a glimpse of her Friday during a campaign stop in Lansing may be disappointed.

Around noon Friday, campaign officials confirmed she would speak at the UAW 652 Hall on Clare Street in Lansing at 5:30 p.m. The event will not be open to the public, they said.

UAW 652 represents workers at the General Motors Grand River Assembly plant.

The General Motors plant is expected to receive a $500 million subsidy under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, for which Harris cast the tie-breaking vote as vice president. The grant would convert the plant from assembling gas-powered cars to electric vehicles and protect 650 jobs, an official said.

The campaign said Harris does not support an electric vehicle mandate but wants to ensure Michigan is equipped to compete regardless of the type of car produced.

Former President Donald Trump also made promises to protect the jobs of auto workers in Michigan.

Both candidates will be in Michigan on Friday, with Harris crossing the state from Grand Rapids to Detroit and Trump making several stops in Oakland and Wayne counties.

The polls suggest the Nov. 5 election in just over two weeks is a mess, with Michigan and a handful of other swing states close enough to be not just within the margin of error, but within tenths of a percentage point.

Friday’s visit from Harris is the last in the Lansing area of the campaigns.

On September 13, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, spoke with Democratic supporters at the Graduate hotel in downtown East Lansing. His wife Gwen also appeared in Lansing on September 24.

On August 29, Trump spoke to supporters at Alro Steel in Potterville.
