Dale Steyn confirms departure as SRH bowling coach

Former South African fast bowling legend Dal Steyn has announced his departure as bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The former announced the same just before the mega IPL 2025 auction and ended his two-year coaching stint with the franchise.

Steyn’s association with SRH was fruitful, both as a player and as a coach. His expertise has been crucial in nurturing young talents like Umran Malik and has contributed to the team’s success. The decision to part ways follows Steyn’s absence from IPL 2024 due to personal reasons, during which James Franklin stepped in as bowling coach.

While Steyn’s has revealed that he will not return to the IPL, but has confirmed his continued association with the franchise’s sister team, Sunrisers Eastern Cape, in the SA20 competition. The 41-year-old took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to make the announcement.

“Many thanks to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as a bowling coach in the IPL. Unfortunately I will not be back for the IPL 2025. However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa Two-time winners here in SA20, let’s try to make it three in a row,” he wrote.

Dale Steyn joined SRH’s coaching organization at the end of 2021

Under Steyn’s leadership, Eastern Cape has won back-to-back SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024. The veteran speedster’s IPL journey has been illustrious as he has represented several franchises as a player including Deccan Chargers, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions.

The coaching setup at SRH has undergone several changes in the past few years. Steyn was initially appointed in late 2021 under head coach Tom Moody. Brian Lara then took over in 2023, followed by the appointment of Daniel Vettori as head coach for the 2024 season. Under Vettori’s leadership and with Franklin as bowling coach, SRH reached the IPL final in 2024, their first since 2018, before losing to Kolkata Knight Riders.
