GWS captain Toby Greene’s manager demands $20,000 fine for Wacky Wednesday

GWS captain Toby Greene’s manager demands ,000 fine for Wacky Wednesday

GWS captain Toby Greene “had to be better” but an expected $20,000 fine for failing to pick up team-mates suspended for bad behavior at a players-only function could be “too much”, according to his manager.

Greene is one of six GWS players facing sanctions for inappropriate behavior at the players-only ‘Wacky Wednesday’ party, which reportedly featured a blow-up doll and skits making fun of former NRL star Jarryd Hayne to make.

The Giants captain was not involved in any skits but faces a hefty fine for showing a lack of leadership in failing to stop his teammates.

His manager, Paul Connors, admitted on Greene’s behalf that a mistake had been made but said the timing of the day, which was held shortly after GWS surrendered a 44-point lead in the semi-final defeat to the Brisbane Lions , influenced his behavior.

“Toby accepts that he is the leader of the club and he needed to improve,” Connors told SEN on Thursday morning.

‘But besides, he was as interested in that crazy Monday as you would have been. He had lost a match in which he had a 44-point lead.

“He was emotionally exhausted and couldn’t think about anything.

“So yes, Toby accepts that he could have done things better, but again, it is for others to discuss whether $20,000 is too much.”

The Giants released a statement on Wednesday evening saying some of the allegations were “disturbing” and “contrary to the club’s values” but also that some, including suggestions that an inflatable doll was involved, were part of “wrong information”.

An AFL investigation has imposed fines and suspensions, which the players involved are weighing whether to accept or challenge.

“The Giants confirmed yesterday that the club is aware of allegations of inappropriate behavior at the players’ end-of-season event last month,” the club statement said.

“The club takes the matter very seriously and has acted quickly after receiving the concerns. All parties have cooperated fully with the AFL to ensure the allegations are fully investigated.

“Some of the allegations are disturbing and completely contrary to the club’s values and policies. There is also a level of misinformation and rumors being spread that is completely inappropriate, especially while the investigation is ongoing.

“The club will provide further comment once the outcome of the investigation has been completed.”
