Female prison officer, 28, had ‘illicit relationship with inmate’ at HMP Berwyn, court hears

A female prison officer at a notorious men’s prison in Wales was today accused of having an illicit relationship with an inmate.

Jessica McCleary, 28, of Froncysyllte, Llangollen, appeared before Wrexham magistrates charged with misconduct in a public office.

The alleged relationship took place at Berwyn Prison, Wrexham, with inmate Levi Weekes.

The court heard McCleary is accused of entering into a relationship with Weekes between October 25 and November 4 last year.

She was bailed to appear at Mold Crown Court next month. A pre-sentence report was ordered.

Prosecutor Justin Espie said McCleary had developed a relationship with Weekes and notes were recovered between the two.

The prison can hold 2,000 men, including prisoners from North Wales, Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham and members of organized crime gangs.
