Lee Carsley tells FA what type of manager they need to take charge of England | Football | Sport

Interim England manager Lee Carsley appears to have moved further away from taking on the role permanently after admitting the job “deserves a world-class coach who has won trophies”.

The 50-year-old’s suggestion after Thursday’s surprise defeat to Greece that he will “hopefully” return to his role with the under-21s after next month’s matches was confusing.

And his admission before the 3-1 victory over Finland in the Nations League that he had not formally applied for the vacancy before the August 2 deadline. He was appointed temporary boss a week later. three international breaks he was charged with.

But after the win in Helsinki, Carsley gave further insight into how he sees the situation, telling ITV 1: “My bosses have made it perfectly clear what they need from me.”

“This job deserves a world-class coach who has won awards and done it and I’m still on my way to doing that.”

“I haven’t thought about it that much. I keep saying that my assignment was to play six games and I am very happy with that.”

ITV pundit Roy Keane believes England should wait and see if Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola is available. He says: “The FA should go for the best man, whatever. Go for the best. Pep’s contract expires this summer.”

Carsley was certainly happy to get things back on track after the criticism he received after his experimental team selection against Greece failed spectacularly.

“I’m enjoying it, but the last two days I haven’t enjoyed it. I’m not used to losing and I’m not taking it very well,” he added.

“I thought we were looking for a response (against Finland). I think they showed they responded very well, in the best way.”

“I scored three good goals. I was a little disappointed that we conceded them at the end, but I thought we were a lot better tonight.”

“We played with a lot more control. Looking at the data, we had a lot of ball possession, a lot of passes and created a lot of chances, but I think we can still be better.”

England winger Jack Grealish owes Trent Alexander-Arnold £500 after the Liverpool defender scored a brilliant free-kick.

Leading 1-0 through Grealish’s first-half goal, Alexander-Arnold delivered a set-piece in the 74th minute to give Carsley’s side much-needed breathing space.

“I jokingly said, if you score this I’ll give you £500, and he just threw it in the top bin. I owe him,” Grealish told ITV1.

Declan Rice added a third with six minutes to go before Arttu Hoskonen scored a late consolation for the hosts.

“I think we could have had a few more, especially towards the end when the game started,” Grealish added.

“In the first half it was difficult at times. Ultimately, I think as players we are a little bit upset when we have to concede from a set piece. We needed a win today, so I am happy with that.”

Grealish dismissed criticism of interim boss Carsley after their setback at Wembley.

“I don’t think it has been difficult. Whatever happens with the England manager, some people will always say negative things,” he said.

“I think people used to scream for more so-called attacking players and we do it and it didn’t work for one game and there are a few people who are groaning.”

“In my honest opinion, I don’t understand it. It can happen in matches. He is a top manager, a brilliant guy and I enjoy playing for him.”
