Panaji: Cyber ​​fraudsters are said to have cheated two persons from Goa to the tune Rs 29 lakh by posing as officers of the Mumbai Crime Branch. Both cases were cracked by the Cybercrime police and notices were served on the two suspects who provided the complainants’ bank details to the fraudsters.
In one of the cases, the complainant stated that he was contacted via a telephone call by some persons who identified themselves as FedEx officialsThey further posed as officials of the Mumbai Crime Branch.
On the pretext of examining a parcel, which allegedly contained banned material in the complainant’s name, they forced him to transfer Rs 7 lakh to a bank account, said Superintendent of Police (SP) Rahul Gupta.
The amount was obtained through a personal loan taken without the consent or knowledge of the complainant by hacking his mobile phone, Gupta said. “The suspect thereby misled the complainant imitation and misuse of computer resources.”
The police deployed technical surveillance and identified the suspect. “A Goa Police The team traveled to Calcutta and identified the suspect as Amariit Das, 26 years old. A notice under Section 35 of the BNS was issued to him for compliance,” said Gupta.
Gupta stated that during the investigation, two mobile phones and a passbook were recovered from the suspect.
In the second instance, some unknown persons using WhatsApp mode pretended to be officials of FedEx and Mumbai Crime Police.
“They falsely informed the complainant that a package had been held in her name and that her login details were being misused in matters related to money launderingdrug trafficking and theft. On the pretext of financial verification, the fraudsters induced the complainant to transfer Rs 21 lakh to two different bank accounts, duping her through impersonation and misuse of computer resources,” said Gupta.
“During the investigation, technical surveillance and analysis led the police to Pali, Rajasthan, where Rs 5 lakh was withdrawn from the accounts involved in the crime. A team was sent to Pali. One of the suspects, identified as Ram Nivas of Rohata, Pali, is being interrogated,” Gupta said.
Gupta said the accused had been issued a notice under Section 35 of the BNS for compliance. During the investigation, the police found a mobile phone, a bank passbook and a debit card that were used to commit the crime.
“Scrupulous efforts led to the arrest and recovery of incriminating evidence. One case was reported from Dabolim while the other was from Bardez,” said Gupta.
Goa Police has launched ‘Cyber ​​Surakshit Goem’ campaign to spread awareness among the public. Festivals and religious places are used to reach larger gatherings. “We are also mobilizing a team of cyber volunteers for this purpose,” said Gupta.
