Southee’s Test spot is under threat during the India Tour

Southee’s Test spot is under threat during the India Tour

New Zealand’s veteran pacer Tim Southee is at the center of a major selection debate ahead of the first Test against India in Bengaluru. Having resigned his Test captaincy following a disappointing series against Sri Lanka, where he took just eight wickets at an average of 73.12, Southee’s place in the playing XI is uncertain as the team considers bowling options.

While Southee’s previous performances in India, including his career-best 7 for 64 in Bengaluru 12 years ago, are impressive, his current form and struggles to rediscover his bowling rhythm have raised concerns. With the potential of only two fast bowlers, Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke have emerged as strong contenders, especially given Henry’s recent performances.

Southee’s struggle and New Zealand’s selection dilemma

Tim Southee has been working closely with bowling coach Jacob Oram to regain his form.

According to head coach Gary Stead, Southee is focused on improving the technical aspects of his action to get his “snap” back.

Head coach Gary Stead said discussions between him and Southee would remain private after the Sri Lanka series, but acknowledged they were “delicate” and admitted that without Southee as captain it allowed greater flexibility in selection.

“As with all test tours and series we have reviews at the end and Tim and I had a chat about it and he made the decision to step down,” Stead said. “He felt it was in the best interest of the team. I supported his decision on that front.

“It allows different players to be involved in roles and as a selector and coach you always try to put what you think is the very best team. With Tim as captain he was the man who started for us and led that.” team and I think we always looked at the options that were best for the team going forward.

However, his poor run this year and competition from emerging bowlers like Ben Sears could lead to a tough decision for the selectors.

The balance of New Zealand’s bowling attack is another crucial factor, with the team needing bowlers who can contribute with the bat in the lower order.

If New Zealand opts for three fast bowlers, Southee’s experience can still be appreciated.

However, Stead emphasized the need to pick a side that can take twenty wickets in Indian conditions, which made the final selection decision particularly challenging.

Challenges of India Tour without Williamson and Shami

Kane Williamson’s absence due to injury adds another layer of complexity to New Zealand’s preparation.

Will Young is expected to bat at number 3 in the first Test, with the hope that Williamson will return for the second Test.

For India, Mohammad Shami’s absence will not impact depth, with Stead recognizing India’s ability to replace injured players with equivalent players.

As both teams prepare for the Test series, the balance of the New Zealand squad, especially the bowling unit, will be closely monitored.
