The war on dissent in Southeast Asia captured in the extradition of Malaysia and Cambodia

The image was intended to convey a stark message: criticize Hun Sen and you will be punished even if you are not there Cambodia.

Nuon Toeun appears front and center in the photo released by Cambodian authorities, handcuffed and flanked by armed guards outside a prison in Phnom Penh.

Her crime? Making a social media post criticizing the strongman leader who ruled Cambodia with an iron fist for decades before stepping down in favor of his son last year. Hun Manet.

If convicted, the 36-year-old Cambodian could face a prison sentence of up to five years and heavy fines for inciting social disorder.

Her extradition of Malaysiaunveiled on October 3, has sparked outrage among human rights defenders, who are questioning the decision to deport someone for simply expressing dissent against her own government.

“She did not criticize the Malaysian government, she only criticized her own government,” said Charles Santiago, a former Malaysian MP and co-chair of the Asean Parliamentarians for Human Rights.
