Charles III should not stand in the way if Australia decides to become a republic – report – World

LONDON, October 12. /TASS/. King Charles III will not object if Australia decides to declare itself a republic and no longer consider him head of state, The Daily Mail reported, citing excerpts from the letter sent by the monarch’s personal secretary to members of the Australian Republican Movement sent prior to the reign of Charles III. visit to Canberra and Sydney.

“His Majesty acts as constitutional monarch on the advice of his Ministers and whether Australia becomes a republic is therefore a matter for the Australian public to decide,” said the letter, received by the Movement in response to its request for a meeting with the king.

The movement, founded in 1991, calls for the head of state to be elected and the office of governor general to be abolished. Meanwhile, Australia and Britain will remain “best friends and allies”.

In 1999, Australia held a referendum on becoming a republic, but 55% of respondents voted to retain the monarchy. This debate has re-emerged following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last September.
