DELPHI, IND – The latest lawsuit in the Delphi murder case seeks to block prison guards from testifying. Richard Allen is accused of killing Abby Williams and Libby German, and prosecutors say he confessed to the murders 61 times.

Allen has been in custody since Indiana State Police announced his arrest in October 2022. He has spent significant time in “the hole,” or solitary confinement, which his lawyers say led to nervous breakdowns and should make his confessions useless in his defense.

Allen’s legal team also says prison guards do not have the necessary expertise to assess his condition and that their testimony conflicts with a court ruling on expert witnesses.

The trial begins Monday with jury selection in Allen County. Once selected, the jurors are transported to Carroll County for the proceedings.

According to multiple media reports, the month-long trial will cost taxpayers several million dollars.
