Prosecutors say a 34-year-old man walked into a police station and admitted to sexually assaulting and abusing a child under the age of 13 in Mundelein.

Alexander Ramos, 34, of Mundelein, was indicted Wednesday by a grand jury on two counts of criminal sexual abuse of a child and three counts of criminal sexual abuse of a child.

Lake County Assistant State’s Attorney Colleen McConnell said Ramos went to Mundelein police on the evening of September 14 to confess to sexually assaulting a juvenile family member.

Ramos said the first incident occurred in late 2023, when the child was not yet 13 years old.

He said he saw the girl sleeping in a bathrobe and she turned over and exposed herself, McConnell said. He allegedly laid his hands on her and touched her inappropriately.

Ramos said he felt like he was “going too far,” so he stopped and left the room, McConnell said.

A few weeks later, the child was sleeping in the same bedroom as Ramos when the man noticed she was sleeping close to him.

He put his hand on her hip and she didn’t wake up, so he moved his hand over her chest, McConnell said.

Three similar incidents occurred in which Ramos put his hands down the girl’s pants while she slept and sexually assaulted her, McConnell said.

In at least one of the incidents, the victim’s mother was in bed with them when the incidents occurred.

The victim’s mother recently caught Ramos waking up in the middle of the night and entering the child’s room.

He had no explanation for his actions and he told her it was no longer appropriate for him to help her when she was having trouble sleeping, McConnell said.

She stopped letting him near the girl when she noticed him giving the child a massage in their living room.

Ramos, who said he was “attracted” to the child, told the woman he would turn himself in to police, McConnell said.

The mother confirmed to police that the child occasionally slept in their bed because she had trouble sleeping and that Ramos sometimes went to the girl’s bedroom with the intention of helping her fall asleep.

Mundelein police went to the home and found clothing the victim had worn during the assault.

McConnell said Ramos was previously convicted of assault after initially being charged in Lake County in 2005 with aggravated criminal sexual abuse when he was a minor.

The Lake County State’s Attorney filed a petition to detain Ramos after his arrest last month.

The petition was granted and Ramos is being held in the Lake County Jail pending trial.

Ramos will be brought before a judge during a hearing on Tuesday.
