Local resident sentenced to prison for cocaine distribution

Local resident sentenced to prison for cocaine distribution

Overview of the case
In a significant crackdown on drug-related crime, Wayne Battles, a 44-year-old Middletown resident, was sentenced to seven years in prison for his role in the distribution of crack cocaine. This sentencing, announced by Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler, follows Battles’ guilty plea to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. This case highlights the ongoing problem of drug trafficking in the Hudson Valley region, where there has been an alarming increase in addiction and related crimes.

The undercover operation
Battles’ illegal activities came to light during a series of undercover operations in July 2020, when he met with an undercover agent to sell crack cocaine. The situation escalated in October 2020 when New York State Police stopped a vehicle driven by Battles and discovered approximately 27 grams of cocaine in his possession. His admission that he intended to sell the substance during plea proceedings further strengthened the case against him, reflecting a disturbing trend in the field where drug sales are increasingly targeting vulnerable populations.

A strong warning to drug dealers
District Attorney Hoovler emphasized that this lengthy prison sentence should serve as a warning to anyone considering engaging in drug-related activities in Orange County. “You will be arrested and you will face severe punishment,” he stated, reaffirming the commitment of law enforcement agencies to rigorously tackle drug trafficking. This commitment is critical, especially in a region grappling with the impact of the opioid crisis and rising drug abuse.

A joint effort
Hoovler also praised the diligent work of law enforcement, particularly the New York State Police, whose investigation led to Battles’ arrest. The case was prosecuted by Senior Assistant District Attorney Richard Giordano, highlighting ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of the community from narcotics threats. Recent statistics indicate a significant increase in drug-related arrests in the Hudson Valley, underscoring the urgency for continued vigilance and community support in combating this epidemic.
