Joel Matip confirms SHOCK’s retirement in his own perfect way

Joel Matip has apparently retired from football. It’s a shock, but he did it in his own perfect way.

According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Joel Matip has retired from football. The German outlet claims the former Liverpool defender has decided to call it quits, just months after leaving Anfield after eight years.

Matip’s Liverpool career ended sadly, of course. The player suffered a serious injury at the end of 2023, ruling him out for most of the campaign. It meant he could play no role at all in Jurgen Klopp’s farewell tour.

And it seems the Cameroonian won’t be a player for anyone anymore. He has been linked with numerous other clubs, including a return to the Premier League, but reports here suggest he is calling it quits.

It’s fitting that Matip has done this without any fanfare. He never courted anyone as a player, and he’s leaving without a formal announcement, it seems.

In fact, the football world was not aware of it. Hamburg attempted to sign him, with a scout contacting Matip and asking if their sporting director could get in touch about a free transfer.

But Matip informed the scout that he would not be available – he is no longer a player. Honestly, it couldn’t be a more perfect way for the 33-year-old to bow out.

Matip will go down in history as one of the best defenders to ever play for Liverpool, and it’s a huge shame that it all ended the way it did. He deserved a rightful farewell on the field.

And we have to believe that the injury has something to do with the shock retirement. After all, Matip is only 33 and more than good enough to play a major role at a top club.

Instead, he takes on something new, as an assistant for his son’s Under 13 team.
