Man sentenced to life for roadside murder in Boksburg

The deceased had stopped at the side of a Boksburg road before his killer and accomplice tried to rob him and his friends.

A man will serve a life sentence for killing another man in a “senseless” Boksburg incident.

The victim was shot on the evening of December 10, 2022, after his attacker and an accomplice attacked him while he was parked along the road.

In passing the sentence, the magistrate emphasized the need to protect society from those who would carelessly take the life of another.

Friends needed the toilet

Reekelelitswe John Dingane and his accomplice approached a group of people who had stopped on the side of a road near Lilianton about 8.30pm.

It is believed members of the group had to relieve themselves and as they did so, Dingane and the other man drew their weapons on the group.

The victim’s name was not revealed by the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), but he was shot while resisting the robbery, while the two men fled the scene.

A police patrol car was within earshot of the incident and immediately responded to the scene to assist.

Information shared by community members guided officers as they pursued the suspects to nearby informal housing, where Dingane’s accomplice was killed as he tried to escape.

Dingane was arrested and later convicted of murder, aggravated robbery and three counts of attempted murder.

Conviction to ‘prevent violence’

The verdict was handed down on October 10 by the Vosloorus regional court.

District court prosecutor Mduduzi Mnyandu used eyewitness accounts to explain Seal Dingane’s fate.

“Magistrate Harichand emphasized the need for accountability and the importance of protecting the community from individuals who commit such heinous acts,” said Gauteng NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.

“The court’s decision is a step toward justice for the victims and a reminder that we must continue to work together with society to prevent violence in our community,” she concluded.
