For a moment, Stewart’s veneer of authority seems to falter as she says, “I don’t think Andy ever knew about that.”

Martha Stewart married Andrew Stewart in 1961. When she was 19, she attended Barnard College, and her ex-husband attended Yale Law School. He made a career in publishing and was an executive at art publisher Harry N. Abrams, after which he founded his own publishing house, Stewart, Tabori & Chang.

The former couple met on a blind date, she told People. Stewart described herself as attracted to the fact that her future husband was “extremely serious.”

They were married until Martha Stewart filed for divorce in 1990.

“Divorce was a terrible thing for me because we were the first to get divorced in my family,” Martha Stewart told People in a 2020 interview. “And the fact that we haven’t spoken since the divorce is even more painful. But I am very strong and I am very motivated to continue with life.

“I have survived the rigors of time, of marriage, of having children, of building a business from scratch,” she continued. “I survived it very well and I think I am making the best of it.”

They share a daughter

Their daughter, Alexis Stewart, was born in 1965.

Like her mother, Alexis Stewart is a graduate of Barnard College. She is also a television and radio host and co-author of the 2011 book ‘Whateverland: Learning to Live Here’, in which she wrote an honest account of her childhood.

The two would later divorce and Andrew Stewart would marry Shyla Nelson, she shared on Facebook. Nelson is the CEO and president of Fieldstone Publishing.
