Martha Stewart married Andrew Stewart in 1961, but their love eventually boiled over for good.

The couple welcomed their daughter, Alexis Stewart, in 1965 before separating in 1987 and officially divorcing in 1990.

In 1995, Martha’s mother, Martha Kostyra, told People that the bitter divorce had left her daughter “severely wounded.”

Kostyra added: “I don’t think she’ll ever get over it.”

Decades later, in 2020, the 83-year-old opened up to the outlet that she had moved forward despite the pain.

“Divorce was a terrible thing for me because we were the first in my family to get divorced,” Martha admitted. “And the fact that we haven’t spoken to each other since the divorce is even more painful. But I am very strong and I am very motivated to continue with life.

“I survived the rigors of time, of marriage, of having children, of building a business from scratch. I survived it very well and I think I am making the best of it.”

In RJ Cutler’s new Netflix documentary ‘Martha’, the businesswoman revealed that she was unfaithful to her ex-husband.

“Young women, listen to my advice. If you’re married and your husband starts cheating on you, he’s a piece of shit,” Martha said in the doc’s trailer, which dropped Thursday. “Get out of that marriage.”

A producer jokes, “Didn’t you have an affair early on?”

Martha then admits, “Yes, but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that.”

He met Martha on a blind date

The couple met when they went on a blind date. Martha told People that she was attracted to Andrew because he was “extremely serious.” After a year of dating, they tied the knot in 1961.

He studied law and is now a publisher

Andrew’s serious side was on full display when he met Martha as a 23-year-old law student at Yale. According to the New York Times, Andrew graduated from the University of Virginia before getting his law degree from Yale.

He also holds a master’s degree in law from Columbia University.

Andrew pursued a career in publishing and is currently publisher emeritus of Fieldstone Publishing, a nature publishing company.

He and Martha were home renovators

During their relationship, Andrew and Martha spent time renovating old houses. People reported in 1995 that the couple spent the first weekends of their marriage “restoring a schoolhouse in the Berkshires.”

Andrew and Martha first started renovating homes in 1971 after Andrew bought a fixer-upper in Westport, Connecticut, according to an interview with CNN.

They called the property Turkey Hill Farm, and it was where Martha started the lifestyle empire that launched her to billionaire status in 1999.

Martha and Andrew welcomed their only child together, daughter Alexis, on September 27, 1965.

Andrew shared during a 1995 interview with People that he regrets the way he and Martha raised their daughter, saying, “I think we did a bad job as parents.”
