KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • BCCI named the Indian squad for the New Zealand series
  • Only 1 player was left out of the team that faced Bangladesh
  • RCB are due to announce their retention list later this month

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru are said to have heaved a sigh of relief after the Board of Control for India (BCCI) announced the squad for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand, ahead of the deadline to announce the list of retained players for the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) to make.

The team was on the expected footing with Yasj Dayal the only absentee from the team that defeated Bangladesh 2-0. Dayal did not make his debut during the two-match series and was named in the playing XI of Uttar Pradesh (UP) for the Ranji Trophy clash against Bengal earlier in the day, indicating he was not in India’s plan for the New Zealand series.

Why is Yash Dayal’s India call-up good news for RCB?

Dayal’s absence from the Indian team will be great news for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru as he will not be able to make his debut for the national team in any form until October 31. This means that the left-arm pacer has no limit before RCB has to submit its retention list.

For those unfamiliar, the BCCI has ruled that at least one (maximum 2) retained player out of the six allowed should be uncapped. Any player who has not yet played for India is not required to fall under the retention limits of Rs. 18, 14 or 14 crore can stay with its franchise for Rs. 4 crores.

This offers RCB an opportunity to retain a player they bought for Rs. 5 crore last year with a 20% pay cut. With RCB giving him a platform for an incredible comeback after a disastrous season with Gujarat Titans (GT) and lower bids at the mega auction, it will be surprising if Dayal rejects the offer to stay.

Dayal was a key reason behind the Bengaluru-based franchise’s stunning turnaround in the 2024 season as he took 15 wickets in 14 matches. The 26-year-old famously dismissed MS Dhoni in the nail-biting finale of RCB’s victory over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a virtual quarter-final.

Earlier this week, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) suffered a blow as both Nitish Reddy and Mayank Yadav made their debuts for India in the 1st T20I against Bangladesh. Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will be hoping that Harshit Rana does not get his debut cap in the third and final T20I on Saturday (October 12).
