The vacancies in Overwatch 2 indicate a major overhaul of competitive and ranked play

A new job listing for Overwatch 2 confirms that a “major feature” is in development, which directly involves esports and the more competitive side of Overwatch.

Overwatch 2 has entered its second year and while the sequel to the hero shooter has had some controversies, such as the move to 5v5 gameplay, the cancellation of the PvE story and its monetization methods, it still has a loyal following. fanbase.

On October 9, fans spotted a very intriguing job posting for a “Product Marketing Consultant” on Blizzard’s website, detailing that an “important position” was coming up.

Normally job postings can provide some clues as to what’s being developed, and the fact that Blizzard is willing to hire someone just to focus on promoting this new feature speaks volumes about how big it could be.

Notably, the listing notes that responsibilities include: “Planning and managing multi-channel marketing campaigns to build anticipation and drive engagement for the feature launch,” and “Working closely with brand , social, product, development, community and esports teams to ensure seamless coordination and execution of the launch plan.”

The inclusion of esports teams certainly raises a few eyebrows. One competitive feature that the developers and game director Aaron Keller have mentioned is a tournament mode that will eventually arrive in the future.

Ahead of the launch of a 5-team short team queue trial in 2023, Keller teased that the mode “could open the door for other types of competition in our game that are team-based” and specifically pointed to tournaments as a possibility.

Additionally, in an interview with Dexerto in 2024, the game director indicated that the team was investigating a hero pick ban system as part of a major annual update.

Such competitive positions would not be aimed at a casual player base, but the job postings suggest that serving high-level players is a priority: “Segment the market and identify target groups that the new feature can appeal to. Create compelling messaging and positioning for the new feature that resonates with target audiences.”

We’ll have to wait and see what exactly Blizzard has in store, but it’s clear that the developers will put a lot of effort into promoting this new OW2 feature – whatever it may be.
