Involution? The biggest threat to China's quantum computing field is the internal risk: expert

China urgently needs to develop elite talent in the field quantum computersaccording to a leading academic, who has warned that the high-tech sector must avoid internal trends that hinder innovation.

Yu Dapeng of the Chinese Academy of Sciences said a lack of ingenuity was a hindrance Chinese quantum computers development, despite the significant public funding poured into the strategically important sector.

The lack of innovation had two main causes: insufficient emphasis on developing talent; and sporadic frenzies in research areas that lead to no juanor involution, Yu said last week in a report from Shanghai-based The Paper.

The term describes an internal entanglement that ultimately leads to a lack of progress or degeneration as resources become depleted.

“Previously, the rating system for Chinese researchers focused on the articles they published. The actual engineering and technology talent itself was considered relatively unimportant,” said Yu, who is also dean of the Shenzhen Institute of Quantum Science and Engineering.
