James McFadden blasts BBC man for picking holes in Celtic’s draw against Atalanta with reminder of Arsenal

James McFadden blasts BBC man for picking holes in Celtic’s draw against Atalanta with reminder of Arsenal

Celtic’s draw against Atalanta was the club’s first-ever point against Serie A opposition in the Champions League.

Serious questions were asked about the Celtic boss and his ability to take his team to one of the best teams in Europe and achieve a positive result in the Champions League this season.

After Celtic’s heavy defeat to Borussia Dortmund, Atalanta set a similar test for Rodgers and the Irishman and his Bhoys passed with flying colors.

But it appears the result was downplayed on BBC Radio Scotland, prompting James McFadden to defend Celtic’s performance in Bergamo.

McFadden defends Celtic and rejects comparison of Atalanta with Dortmund

After the match, although Richard Gordon acknowledged that Atalanta are a good side, he appeared to try to play down the result by claiming that the Italians are not as good as Borussia Dortmund and that led to this discussion.

McFadden: “Rich, I know you’re saying they’re nowhere near Dortmund, but Arsenal came here and put in a defensive performance, but for a world-class save from Raya, Atalanta would have got the win.

“So they’re still a good side, and I think we’re always guilty of this. We did it with Slovan Bratislava, ‘Oh well, they probably won’t be that good.’

Gordon: “I said that Atalanta is a very good team. I just don’t think they are at the level of Dortmund.”

McFadden: “I know you’re not trying to downplay it, but I think sometimes we look at it and say, ‘Well, it was a great showing, but maybe they’re not at that level.’

“Atlanta won 3-0 at Liverpool last season, and they are a very good team. They also beat Bayer Leverkusen.”

James McFadden talks about Celtic’s ‘great performance’ against Atalanta

“This is the beauty of the new format,” McFadden continued, “They’re not going to be playing the same team, so you don’t really know where the teams are, but I guess you just have to enjoy the performance. .

“And the fact that they have received a lot of criticism about the way they approach these games, especially their away games against the big teams, and they have come away with a result.

“It was a great display. And people might look at it and say, they rode their luck or whatever, but they defended themselves well.

“That was an effort they made.”

Any result Celtic can achieve against a Serie A team in Italy in UEFA’s flagship tournament is to be commended. However they did it.

For too long, Rodgers and his team have been criticized for their Champions League results and for being badly beaten by Europe’s elite clubs.

So it’s quite bizarre that on a night when Celtic are getting a great result, someone from the broadcast media is trying to poke holes in it when the Parkhead club should be being praised.
