MBI Scandal: MACC Uncovers New Clues

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has found new clues in its investigation into the corruption scandal involving Selangor’s Mentri Besar Incorporated (MBI).

According to Sinar Harian, MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said they cannot reveal the details at this time as they are still collecting evidence from witnesses.

“The investigation is ongoing and we are collecting witness statements and new evidence has been obtained.

“For now, however, I cannot share any further details about this new information, which indicates that the shares acquired by those involved in this investigation were for personal use and other related matters,” he said.

He told reporters after the graduation ceremony of the MACC Basic Course (Assistant Superintendent Grade P29) at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Academy parade ground here on Thursday (Oct 24).

Regarding influential individuals who may be arrested, as previously reported, he said the MACC is still gathering evidence to determine if testimonies point to the individual in question.

“When the time comes, we will engage them. For now, we need to gather all the evidence to determine if the individual is related, and if necessary, we need to assess whether the evidence points to that person or not.

“If it clearly concerns them, they will have to respond to support the investigation,” he said.

He added that there have been no new arrests to date and that the former Chief Operating Officer (COO) of MBI, who was in pre-trial detention for seven days, has been released after the pre-trial detention period ended.

Moreover, he said the MACC has raided nine buildings in the Klang Valley so far, but no seizures have been made.

“We have not seized any properties because they are not owned by the persons under investigation. Some properties are owned by others who live there, and they are not related to our investigation, so we cannot seize them.

“Some have asked about vehicle seizures; no vehicles have been seized unless necessary,” he said.

It was previously reported that the MACC raided an apartment believed to be a ‘safe house’ for an influential politician and discovered foreign currency worth about RM5 million.

Following this, the MACC raided two other locations suspected of being used as safe houses by the same influential politician, leading to the discovery of cash worth about RM321,000.
