Jamie Miley: Newcastle United youngster wants to follow brother Lewis’ lead during loan spell at Newport

Jamie Miley watched from the stands at St James’ Park as teenage brother Lewis established himself as a Newcastle United first-team player last season.

Now Miley senior is looking to make his own mark in professional football after leaving Newcastle for a loan spell at League Two Newport County.

Like his sibling, Durham-born Jamie is a midfielder who came through Newcastle’s youth academy.

But while Lewis broke into Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side last season at the age of 17, 20-year-old Jamie is yet to play a first-team game for the Magpies.

Instead, he has made his senior debut in Newport colours, with a first Exiles appearance in the EFL Trophy against Cheltenham last month, before making his league triumph in Tuesday’s victory over Gillingham.

Unfortunately for Miley, word that he would be starting at Priestfield came too late for his relatives to get from Tyneside to Kent to watch the match.

But his father is coming to Wales for Newport’s home game against Fleetwood on Saturday – and the hope is that Lewis will also make it to Rodney Parade one day.

“Watching my brother play at St James’ Park week in week out is a dream for me and my family. I am so proud of him for what he does,” Jamie told BBC Sport Wales.

“We are best friends. We always encouraged each other because we were so close. I’ll try to go to his games and he’ll try to get some of mine if he can.

“It’s quite a ride, but hopefully he can come down and experience what it’s like.”
