Matthew Salat arrested in Evansville after altercation with deputies

EVANSVILLE – Two Vanderburgh County sheriff’s deputies were reportedly injured Tuesday during the arrest of a man who allegedly armed himself with two large axes outside a West Side gas station.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. when dispatchers sent deputies to a Casey’s supermarket at the intersection of North Saint Joseph Avenue and Allens Lane after a 911 caller found the man “wielding two axes around and talking to himself” outside the store. provides a statement.

Court records indicate the man is 37-year-old Matthew Q. Salat. He was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on charges of resisting law enforcement resulting in bodily harm, a Level 6 felony, and disorderly conduct, a Class B misdemeanor, according to the jail’s website.

“Salat was holding two silver axes and yelling in the parking lot,” Deputy A. Mentzel wrote in Salat’s arrest affidavit. “Deputy (Matt) Gardner instructed Matthew to drop the axes, which he did. “I started to instruct Matthew to put his hands on his head, which he refused to do.”

While holding his hands in the air, Salat reportedly told officers that he did not trust them and that people were “following him and trying to kill him,” Mentzel wrote.

In a press release discussing the incident, the VCSO wrote that the responding deputies had undergone crisis intervention training and attempted to de-escalate the situation, which quickly took a dark turn: Salat allegedly began yelling for the deputies to shoot him, his arrest affidavit states, before he began walking toward oncoming traffic on North Saint Joseph Avenue.

“Deputy Gardner and I reached Matthew in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes,” the affidavit said. “Because we did not know if Matthew had any other weapons and to prevent him from running into oncoming traffic, we then took Matthew to the ground where he continued to resist.”

After a brief struggle, deputies said they managed to handcuff Salat without resorting to using their own weapons.

Gardner reportedly suffered lacerations to his left arm, while Mentzel suffered lacerations to both of his hands and a “deep laceration” to his right knee, the affidavit said. Paramedics assisted the deputies. Salat reported that he suffered no injuries during the altercation and was transported to jail after a medical evaluation.

On Wednesday, a Vanderburgh County judge ordered Salat held in jail on a $500 bond. The first hearing in the case was scheduled for Monday afternoon, according to court records.

“Prior to (Salat’s) release, a Crisis Intervention Team evaluation will be conducted by confinement staff to determine if further medical or mental health care is needed,” the VCSO news release said.
