Amsterdam police warn of possible new unrest in city after last week’s anti-Semitic attacks

A senior Amsterdam police officer warned Tuesday that the city was hearing calls for riots similar to those they heard last week when a group of Palestinian protesters attacked Israeli fans outside a soccer match.

Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema last week saying The attackers rode around the city on scooters looking for Israeli fans. The warning comes after the city. extended ban on protests until Thursday. Still, more protests took place on Monday, when dozens of people armed with sticks and firecrackers set fire to a tram.

Olivier Dutilh of Amsterdam police told a court Tuesday that there are “signs that there are calls for similar riots” on the city’s west side. according to the Associated Press.

Halsema, Amsterdam’s police chief and the city’s top prosecutor, also released a report on Monday that revealed there were incidents incited by supporters of both sides of the Gaza war in Amsterdam last week.

Authorities said there were posts on social media threatening Israeli fans the day before the match. Additionally, that night Israeli fanatics tore down a Palestinian flag and several beat a taxi driver. Taxi drivers attempted to unite online in response and attempted to attack a casino where 400 Israeli fans were gathered, but police were able to avoid a major confrontation.

After the game, Israeli protesters were seen “running around with sticks destroying things,” according to the report. But pro-Palestinian protesters also “moved in small groups, on foot, scooter or car, quickly attacking the (Israeli) fanatics before disappearing,” the City Hall timeline said.

Police said there has been a tense atmosphere in the city since the attacks. A total of eight people are detained for last week’s violence, and their ages range between 16 and 37 years old.
