The New York Rangers captain puts a questionable hit on the Canadiens forward

New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba has made a name for himself over the course of his NHL career as a player willing to toe the line of big hits. Trouba has been suspended several times for foul hits, but the Rangers captain has no plans to change the way he plays the game.

That became clear when the Rangers took on the Montreal Canadiens. In the third period, while leading 5-2, Trouba crushed Canadiens forward Justin Barron with a huge hit near the boards.

Barron carried the puck through the neutral zone, but didn’t expect to be hit with so much force. Barron left the game and did not return.

When Trouba throws his hit, you see Barron’s head snap back before bouncing off the ice. Canadian defenseman Mike Matheson immediately retaliated against Trouba.

Trouba was not punished for the hit, but was given five minutes for fighting. Matheson was given five minutes for fighting and an additional two minutes for instigating action. The Canadiens defenseman was also given a 10-minute misconduct.

The referees at the match ruled the goal clean as there was no penalty against Trouba, but people are looking for disciplinary action.

Fans are asking the NHL Department of Player Safety to take a look at Trouba’s big hit on Barron. Trouba has a history of hits going over the line, this one appears to be a hit to the head and Barron was injured on the play.

Even if the NHL deems it not a deferrable hit, there was certainly no need for one at that point in the game. The Rangers were three goals ahead and would win 7-2. It’s not like Trouba was trying to wake his teammates up with the huge hit.

Maybe the action doesn’t warrant a suspension, but it certainly wasn’t necessary at the time.
