Taiwanese singer Yu Tian’s son-in-law receives suspended prison sentence for involvement in scam

Gary Chen, son-in-law of famous Taiwanese singers Yu Tian and Li Ya-ping, received a suspended prison sentence for involvement with a scam syndicate.

The 37-year-old was arrested in April on suspicion of working as a lead broker for a fraud syndicate.

Chen and eight others were charged in June by the New Taipei District Prosecutor’s Office, including with fraud, money laundering and participating in organized crime.

On November 12, the New Taipei District Court sentenced Chen to two years in prison, with a five-year suspended sentence.

According to Taiwanese media, he received a suspended sentence because he has no criminal record and has compensated the victims of the scam.

Chen will be on probation during this period and will have to perform 240 hours of community service and attend eight hours of legal education lessons.

His wife is Yu Yuan-chi, the second daughter of Yu, 76, and Li, 74. The couple has an eldest daughter and a son.

Yu Tian rose to fame with the song Under The Banyan Tree (1977), while Li is known for her moving performance of the song Wake Up, Lei Meng Na (1971).

Ms. Yu died of cancer at the age of 39 in August 2022. She had a daughter, who will turn seven in November, and a five-year-old son, with Chen.

The family made headlines in June when Yu Tian and Li filed for guardianship of their two grandsons after Chen’s arrest.

The couple told Taiwanese media after a court mediation session that they had not reached a preliminary agreement with Chen and would seek further talks.

Li told Taiwanese news portal SET News on November 12 that he respected the court’s decision to give Chen a suspended prison sentence. He added that he had visited his two grandchildren in the last fortnight.
