How to get paid for tips from Metro Crime Stoppers

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) – Birmingham police have arrested a suspect in the Five Points South mass shootingbut no one has received money for their tips yet.

People are still forwarding information about the mass shooting Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama. So far they have collected about 150 tips. Including the BPD cases, the researchers searched nearly 500 of them.

“The whole idea of Crime Stoppers is that you can remain anonymous and that means no one knows who you are,” said Bob Copus, executive director of Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama. “We’re not going to ask their names. We’re going to give them a tip ID number and they’re like, ‘From now on, the only notification we want to know is your tip ID number.’

Copus explains that you’ll want to keep that ID number handy because that’s how you’ll find out if you’re entitled to reward money.

“From there, we forward the tip directly to whatever police department it is, and so we let that agency analyze the tip, see if they can do anything with it, and then they will respond with the tip. confirmation that this tip was good,” he said.

Copus says there is an online program they use to share which Tip ID numbers are paid and often you don’t have to wait long.

Once police confirm which tips helped them in a case, that information goes to the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors, which will then approve the payout.

Some Crime Stoppers agencies across the country require someone to be convicted before you get paid. That is not the case with Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.

If the police believe that tip had value, then you can get paid and to the extent that we pay every week, we pay out,” Copus said.

A $100,000 cash reward is still available for tips on the Birmingham mass shooting. Of that, $50,000 comes from Crime Stoppers.

At this time, no one has received money for their tips in the business.

“At this time we have not received any notification from Birmingham Police,” Copus explained. “They have to look a lot and analyze a lot. With their tips and our tips, you’re now talking about almost 500 tips, so they still have a lot to do, so we’re very patient. We ask our tipsters to be very patient.”

Copus says the only way to change Birmingham is for citizens to take back the city to ensure our streets are safe.

If you have information about a crime, you can share it anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777 or by submitting a tip form online.
