Climate change action is ‘robust and will endure’ through Trump years, UN climate chief tells COP29 – Firstpost

Global action on climate change “is strong and will endure” despite the reelection of Donald Trump, who has pledged to withdraw from the Paris agreement, the U.N. climate chief said Tuesday.

“Many of you have been reporting on the climate implications of political events in recent weeks. I’ll just say this: our process is solid. It is robust and will endure,” Simon Stiell told reporters at the COP29 talks in Baku.

Trump’s election victory has cast a long shadow over proceedings in Azerbaijan, with concerns that the impending US withdrawal from the landmark 2015 Paris agreement could undermine ambition around the negotiating table.

Stiell reiterated calls for the meeting to show that global climate solidarity is not dead.

“Global cooperation is the only way for humanity to survive global warming,” he said.

The crucial talks focus on increasing financing to help developing countries adapt to climate change and shift their economies away from fossil fuels.

But the small group of rich countries currently paying the funds want the pool of donors to be expanded and are resisting calls to increase the current pledge of $100 billion a year tenfold.

Many face national publics more concerned about inflation and sluggish economies than climate action.

But Stiell insisted the two were linked.

“The climate crisis is quickly becoming an economy killer,” he warned.

If no action is taken, “every country and every household will be affected even more than today.”

“Climate action is insurance against global inflation.”
