Warren County horse eviction sparks controversy, economic concerns

WARREN COUNTY, Ohio (WKRC) – The Warren County Agricultural Society’s decision to evict approximately 300 horses from its harness racing training facility has sparked significant controversy and concern among local residents and officials.

The society, which manages the Warren County Fairgrounds, cited high operating costs as the reason for the eviction, estimating an annual expense of about $429,000 to run the facility.

The eviction order, issued in October, has drawn criticism from horsemen, farmers, business owners and others who depend on harness racing for their livelihood. Many argue that the decision will negatively affect the local economy.

During a special meeting held by the society, dozens of attendees raised concerns and reviewed a financial package detailing most, but not all, of the society’s expenses from the last fiscal year. The board defended its decision, attributing the eviction to tenants’ nonpayment, which they said created an extreme financial burden despite rent negotiations over the summer.

Confusion over the board’s finances was evident at the meeting, with both attendees and board members questioning the financial review. Some board members argued that the package was not an audit and did not fully represent their financial situation.

Horsemen expressed frustration with the board’s handling of the eviction, believing a solution could be reached without resorting to such drastic measures. Former board members also raised concerns, suggesting that the board did not penalize those who had not paid.

The objective of the meeting was to approve the financial statements that will be presented to the board of directors.

The eviction will take place on December 1. Use of training facilities, including the track, will be suspended if this is not resolved.
