Veterans honored during their service in Henry County

BASSETT, Va. (WDBJ) – In Henry County, a tribute to the region’s veterans included a special salute to those who served in Vietnam.

With the 29th Division Band providing the patriotic score and a program honoring two veterans of the year, a large crowd gathered at the Historic John D. Bassett Event Center to show their support.

New College Institute Executive Director and Iraq veteran Joe Sumner spoke about what he believes motivates most veterans.

“The reality is, we’re not fighting because we hate what’s in front of us,” Sumner told the audience. “We are fighting because we deeply love what is behind us. And that’s what I would ask you to remember.”

Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-9th District) praised those who contribute in support roles.

“No matter what you do and have done to serve America, we thank you,” he said.

The crowd then crossed the street to dedicate a bench honoring more than 100 Vietnam War veterans, whose names were not included on the existing Vietnam Veterans Memorial outside the Bassett Historic Center when it was completed in 2018. .

“For all Vietnam veterans, I think it’s a memory we won’t forget,” said Roy D. Janey, a veteran whose name is now on the court.

“It’s just important to get the names of as many people out there so that the community appreciates them,” said Lewis Turner, another Vietnam veteran whose name is now on the memorial. He was part of the committee that planned the expansion.

The names are engraved on the back of the bench and on the front is this message: “To all Vietnam veterans. Thank you for your service and welcome home!
