Since the cover Roe v. WadeAccording to a new study, infant mortality rates in the United States have increased significantly as a result of abortion bans that have taken effect.

The study — published Oct. 21 by JAMA Pediatrics — analyzed child morale data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) since 2018 and compared it to infant mortality rates 18 months after the infant death. Dobbs vs. Jackson pronunciation.

Dobbs vs. Jackson is the historic Supreme Court ruling of June 2022 that was overturned Roe v. Wadethat granted women in every state the right to abortion.

Researchers found that after the ruling, overall infant mortality increased by 7% and by 10% among infants with disabilities. Furthermore, approximately 80% of these excess infant deaths could be attributed to congenital abnormalities.

Birth defects can range from mild to severe, and in some cases babies can survive for only a few months. The most common types can affect the baby’s spine or heart.

Alison Gemmill – a perinatal epidemiologist at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who was not involved in the study – told the Los Angeles Times that these findings show that Dobbs’ decision deterred women from terminating pregnancies that would otherwise have ended in abortion, similar to her own research.

She recently led a more focused study in Texas that found infant mortality rose due to the state’s ban on abortion.

“Before these abortion bans, people had the option to terminate an abortion if it turned out that the fetus had a serious congenital defect – we are talking about organs that are outside the body and other things that are very serious and incompatible with the life,” Gemmill told the outlet. However, if women in these situations had no choice but to continue their pregnancies, “those babies would die shortly after birth.”

Dr. Parvati Singh, assistant professor of epidemiology and lead author of the new study, explained that the national findings mirror those drawn from state-level research, calling it a “national ripple effect.”

“This study provides preliminary evidence of the harmful effects of federal abortion restrictions in terms of infant mortality,” Singh said MedPage Today.

“I’m not sure people expected infant mortality to rise Dobbs. It’s not necessarily what people were thinking about. But restricting access to health care can have a broader impact on public health than can be anticipated,” said Dr. Maria Gallo, professor of epidemiology and co-author of the study.
