McCormick was not invited to the Senate orientation because the race against Casey was declared “too close”

Orientation for first-term U.S. senators begins this week, but Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer declined to extend an invitation to Republican Dave McCormick.

While votes are still being counted, McCormick is leading in the race against incumbent Democrat Bob Cassey.

The Associated Press projected McCormick to win the race.. However, Casey has not conceded the race and several major media outlets have yet to declare a winner, stating that the race was still too close to determine an exact result.

According to The HillSen. Krysten Sinema of Arizona said McCormick should be invited to the orientation, along with Rep. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat, who is also currently leading the Senate race in Arizona.

Sinema, a former Democrat, became an independent in 2022.

“In 2018 my race went 6 days without being called” Sinema said in a post on X. “I took a red-eye flight to DC to do the Senate orientation; I learned a lot and built lasting relationships that week. Dave McCormick and Rubén Gallego will be senators for PA and AZ. “They should be invited to orientation and start learning the job.”

Politico reported that Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) is also among those calling for McCormick to be included in this week’s guidance.

“Schumer does not allow @DaveMcCormickPA to participate in Senate orientation this week because Casey refuses to concede race,” Rubio published in X. “What happened to all the demands that our leaders accept the election result?”

McCormick supporters argue that McCormick’s current lead of approximately 40,000 votes will be insurmountable for Casey.

However, a spokesperson for Schumer said that “with more than 100,000 votes still to be counted in Pennsylvania, the race has not been decided. As is customary, we will invite the winner once the votes are counted.”
