Zelensky signs law bringing Ukraine’s criminal code into line with the Rome Statute

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed the law amending the Criminal and Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine in connection with the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and its amendments.

Ukraine signed the Rome Statute on January 20, 2000. On Wednesday, August 21, 2024, Ukrainian parliamentarians supported the draft law on ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The document was supported by 281 elected representatives.

On October 9, the Verkhovna Rada adopted on second reading Bill No. 11484 amending the criminal code. 228 parliamentarians voted in favor of the bill.

The law aims to align the provisions of the Criminal Code of Ukraine with the standards of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and to ensure criminal prosecution for serious international crimes.

The Rome Statute aims to guarantee criminal prosecution for the most serious international crimes, including genocide, aggression, crimes against humanity and war crimes.
