Suspect in fatal downtown shooting surrenders to police – Sentinel and Enterprise

FITCHBURG – The suspect in a downtown double shooting that left one man dead and another in critical condition Sunday surrendered himself to authorities early Monday morning, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr. .

Jarrod Hegarty, 32, of Townsend, is charged with two counts of armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a firearm, and possession of a firearm without an FID card.

On Sunday around 6:40 p.m., Fitchburg Police received the report of a shooting in the area of ​​360 Main St. Authorities found two men suffering from gunshot wounds.

One victim was transported to UMass Memorial HealthAlliance – Leominster Campus, where he was pronounced deceased. The second victim was transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. His condition is critical but stable.

Through initial investigations, Hegarty was identified as the perpetrator and was reported to still be in a nearby building. Just before 1 a.m. Monday morning, Hegarty left the building and surrendered to authorities.

Hegarty is expected to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court on Monday.

The investigation into the shooting is still ongoing. Agencies involved in the investigation include the Fitchburg Police Department, the State Police Firearms Identification Division, Crime Scene Services, the Special Tactics and Operations (STOP) Team, State Police forensic scientists and State Police detectives who have been assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office.
