Make-A-Way honors officer who de-escalated BB-Gun incident involving autistic child

ARDMORE, Ala. (WAFF) – Make-A-Way is honoring an Ardmore officer and commending him for the way he handled a recent situation involving an autistic child.

Sergeant Michael Cole recently responded to Cedar Hill Elementary School, where an autistic child was playing with a BB gun.

Cole was able to calm the child and de-escalate the situation.

That’s why the local non-profit organization honored him on Monday with a certificate of tribute.

Cole says he was just doing his job.

“Once you realize the situation has escalated and everyone is safe, the best thing to do is just talk to people. You never know what they are going through and why they are in that situation,” he said. “It’s overwhelming, but in a way I don’t feel like I deserve it. This is my job, this is what I do, this is what I signed up for.”

Make-A-Way provides support to people with special needs and their families, both at home and in the classroom.
