A DESPERATE rescue attempt is underway after a car plunged into a river with its driver still inside.

The driver was the only person in the vehicle, but is believed to be seriously injured.

Several emergency services, including police, coastguard and fire brigade, are at the scene in Dartmouth, Devon.

The engine went into the water this morning and the alarm was raised at 8.40 am.

He jumped in front of the local lifeboat centre.

The southern embankment has been closed and the public is asked to avoid the area.

The closures will remain in place throughout the day.

A local said devon live: “There are about 15 emergency cars/vans/fire engines, but no ambulance activity.”

Photos from the scene show road closures still in place, as lifeboat crews and divers frantically search the water.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: “Emergency services are currently at the scene on the South Embankment, Dartmouth, following reports of a car in the water.

“One person, who was the only occupant, is believed to have been seriously injured.

“The closest relatives are not known and are being searched.

“Please keep this in mind if you are at the location and avoid posting identifiable vehicle factors.”
